Extra-Sensory Perception
You have become aware of a prize of 10 million dollars available to
anyone who can prove that ESP actually exists. You and three of your
friends decide to win this prize.
The Task:
You and your friends decide to form a team to do some Internet research
about ESP, then design a test that can be used to identify someone with
ESP skills. To be awarded the prize, your team will have to make a multi-media
presentation to a group of psychologists, explaining how your experiment
connects with theories about ESP and the actual results of your experiment.
The Process:
1. Your team consists of four "scientists", with the following
assignments:
* THE FACT FINDER: this scientist is responsible for finding positive
examples of ESP on the Internet.
* THE THEORIST: this scientist is responsible for the final design
and actual application of the test.
* THE TECHIE: this scientist will collect graphics, produce and operate
a multi-media presentation.
* THE SPOKESPERSON: this scientist will be the presentor at the meeting
with the psychologists.
2. Your team will go on an ESP "down-loading tour" (save
to your laptop):
a. Gather at least 5 positive examples of ESP being demonstrated.
b. Design a test to identify persons who demonstrate ESP skills.
c. Administer this test to all the members of your team.
d. Make a multi-media presentation about your research and the preliminary
success of your test based on the results of testing your team members.
3. Using PowerPoint, prepare at least 10 slides, with graphics and
text, to summarize your research.
4. Present your information at a meeting with the psychologists. (your
biology test)
Keep all factual information separate from theoretical information.
This makes organizing the information much easier. Keep your audience
in mind (a team of psychologists) when you make your presentation. (Present
information in a practical way.) Be creative, even a little theatrical,
when preparing your presentation. Remember, even if they haven't proven
it exists, the psychologists will certainly be familiar with current
theories!
Your scientific research has taken you into the realm of Extra-Sensory
Perception As you know, sharing what you have learned is an essential
part of scientific inquiry, but so is theoretical argument and debate.
Perhaps you noticed areas of disagreement over explanations of ESP.
These are very important issues in the medical and psychological fields
today. Be prepared to discuss these differences in a question-and-answer
session following your presentation.
