Introduction to Biology

Objectives for today:

* Determine the proper measuring system to use in the science lab.
*Convert metric values to English values.

The International System of Measurement (SI) is used for all science measurements.

Review the factor-label method from physical science class. Factor-label can be used to convert measurement units from one system to another.

Use the Factor Label Method above to complete the practice problems.

Practice Problems:
1. Convert 200 pounds to kilograms.
2. Convert 50 megagrams to centigrams.
3. Convert 25 liters to dm3.
4. Convert 100 oC to oF.

Graphing is an important skill needed in all sciences. With the addition of the student laptops, Microsoft Excel is now available to you as a graphing tool. While you still might be asked to construct an occasional graph on paper, most of your science graphs will be made using Excel.

Study this biological problem .

a. Use Microsoft Excel to construct a line graph of the experimental data.

b. Use a self-evaluation rubric to see if your graph is ready to print.

* Look at your graph on the computer screen. Go through all the scoring criteria on the grade rubric.

*When your score on the rubric is at least 95, show the graph to your science facilitator.

c. When you have approval, print the graph.

d. Fill out the self-evaluation column of the rubric.

e. Answer the problem questions on the back of the printed graph.

Turn in the assignment and the completed rubric.

Always staple the rubric on top of the assignment.
