Objectives:

Peripheral Nervous System

* Describe the general structure of a nerve.
* Identify the cranial nerves by number and by name,
and list the major functions of each.
* Describe the origin and fiber composition of (a) ventral
and dorsal roots, (b) the spinal nerve proper,
and (c) ventral and dorsal rami.
* Discuss the distribution of the dorsal and ventral rami of spinal nerves.
* Name the four major nerve plexuses, give the major nerves of each,
and describe their distribution.
* Identify the site of origin and explain the function of the
sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
* Contrast the effect of the parasympathetic and
sympathetic divisions on the following organs: heart, lungs,
digestive system, blood vessels.

Review questions: read the READING ASSIGNMENT, then answer the following questions in a word document.

Do not copy the questions, your answer MUST be in complete sentences and reflect the question.

For multiple choice questions, Put the letter of the answer only.

Head your word document:

Unit 11 Day 4 Peripheral Nervous System

Include your name, hour, date and class in your document.

1. How many pairs of cranial nerves are there? Which are purely sensory? Which activates the chewing muscles? Which helps regulates heart rate and activity of the digestive tract?

2. Except for the vagus nerves, what general area of the body do the cranial nerves serve?

3. How many pairs spinal nerves are there?

4. What region of the body is served by the dorsal rami of the spinal nerves? the ventral rami?

5. Name the four major nerve plexuses formed by the ventral rami and the body region served by each.

6. How does the autonomic nervous system differ from the somatic nervous system?
